Selarón Steps
Lapa
The Selarón Steps are a monumental work of public art linking Lapa and Santa Teresa. Beginning in 1990, Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón covered the 215 steps and surrounding walls with thousands of colorful tiles from Brazil and around the world. The staircase was listed as municipal cultural heritage in 2005 and has become one of Rio de Janeiro's most recognizable urban settings, appearing in film, television, advertising and music videos.
